The HSES Director leads and drives global performance of Kraton’s Health, Safety, Environmental and security (HSES) and Process Safety Excellence.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to the following:

  • Working with the various leadership teams to create a culture of performance that continuously strives in the prevention of all accidents and incidents in the workplace. 
  • Responsible for leading and implementing safety programs and processes to ensure best in class performance in protecting employees, and facilities. Ensure process safety management and PSM programs have the same focus and effectiveness as personal safety.
  • Assure that all company facilities are in compliance with all levels of government; local, state, and federal agencies regarding applicable Environmental, Health, and Safety laws and regulations, including all necessary permits. Resolve issues involving violations, and audit facilities for compliance.
  • Develop vision and strategy for continuous improvement of HSES performance across the company, with the ultimate goal of achieving Zero HSES compromises.
  • Develop and Implement performance indicators to monitor, and continuously improve our HSES Management Systems, aligned with ISO 14001 & Responsible Care.
  • Provide advice, interpretation and training to site HSES managers to achieve results. 
  • Develop and maintain an HSES management system with associated minimum required standards.
  • Develop and Execute plans to continually reduce the overall risk profile of the company.
  • Effective implementation of the Security programs.
  • Corrective Action Plan Monitoring – including quality control of actions implemented. 
  • Lead Corporate Crisis Team as required and maintain program health.

Required Skills

  • Proven ability to communicate effectively at different levels in the organization, influence, and drive change in a positive and sustainable way.
  • Advanced knowledge required in US and EU health and Safety regulations; and ability to learn other international regulatory standards. 
  • Experience within a PSM covered facility.
  • 15+ years of combined HSE&S and process safety management, in a chemical manufacturing environment. With 5+ years in an HSES managerial role that oversees the full scope of HSES (process safety, personal safety, environmental, and security).
  • Senior leadership experience with ability to clearly elucidate objectives and progress to the top leadership of the company. 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop talent and build succession strategy.
  • Multifunctional work experience desired (Operations, Supply Chain, Engineering) providing strong abilities to lead multinational, and multifunctional teams. 
  • Excellent interaction and negotiation skills required as the job will interface w/ leadership levels from the top levels of the company through technical and operating staff.  
  • Ability to travel up to 40% of time, depending on home office location.

Education, Certifications & Licenses

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or BS Chemistry or BS in safety science/management.
  • Additional certifications in safety or environment are a plus but not required.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager or Safety Professional.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist, or other equally respected registration or certification is desirable.
